Dr. C. Ajithkumar: Architect of Champions, Advocate of Grassroots Athletics
In the realm of Indian athletics, few individuals have consistently blended performance, vision, and service like Dr. C. Ajithkumar, whose journey from a decorated sprinter to a nationally recognized coach stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication to sports and youth development.
Born and raised in Thrickodithanam, Kottayam, Kerala, Dr. Ajithkumar’s early athletic prowess was evident. From 1987 to 1992, he represented SB College, Changanacherry, under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, earning medals at both Junior National Championships and All India University meets in the 100m and 200m sprint events. These formative years not only instilled discipline and competitive spirit but also provided the foundation for his future in coaching.
His transition from athlete to mentor began with a clear mission — to identify and train raw, often overlooked talent and build systems of support that would empower them to excel at national and international levels. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Ajithkumar has served as a coach, mentor, and sports development strategist at some of India’s leading institutions:
Alva’s Education Foundation, Karnataka – where he played a pivotal role in establishing one of India’s most robust university athletics programs
Mangalore University – where, under his tenure, the athletics team emerged as a consistent force at the All India Inter-University level
Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University, Arunachal Pradesh – where he brought structured athletics coaching to the Northeast region
Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Punjab – where he currently serves as Director of Sports
As a coach, his impact is far-reaching. Dr. Ajithkumar has trained 18 international athletes who have collectively secured 22 medals on global platforms. A landmark achievement came in 2023, when his athlete Bhavani Yadav Bhagavathi earned India’s first-ever medal in the long jump at the World University Games in Chengdu, China. His leadership as Chief Coach of the Indian University Team was crucial in this success — marking a turning point for India in global university athletics.

Through the HRDS India Sports Academy, he is actively involved in nurturing athletic talent from tribal and underserved regions, providing them access to coaching, education, and sports infrastructure.
His career is also marked by moments of national acknowledgment — most notably, his official invitation to Rashtrapati Bhavan in December 2023 as part of the Indian delegation of university athletes and coaches.
